    1. “Play it as it lays” by Joan Didion. Anything by Joan Didion, really. Would also recommend “The White Album” if you prefer short stories.

      “The Girls” by Emma Cline – The titular girls are the Manson girls.

      “The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath – a classic, if you haven’t already read

      These all capture a kind of languid sunbeaten 1960s Americana, with doomsday lurking just beyond the horizon.
