A children’s book I read when I was a child, published by Scholastic. I forgot the title. The most I can remember about it is the book is about a girl who lives with her family in a farm in the American countryside.
She is adventurous and wants to find and discover some long lost historical trail that her town was famous for (maybe the Oregon trail? or some Native American trail?). She camped out for days or weeks on end away from her family to look for the trail. I think she also stole a horse?
Eventually she traced the trail going to the backyard of another town’s mayor, tourists start to visit and make a mess, and she has to clean that up as part of her community service for stealing the horse.
