Just saw the announcement. I’m interested to see how the split pays out in reality. I see pretty big names on there. Supposedly if you sign up for $5 a month the authors get 100% of the books you buy, and you get some savings as well. I’m a scifi reader and at a glance I see Hunger Games, Dune, Hitchikers, Weir, Scalzi, all the usual players. If this actually pays the authors 100% (how do they get around publishing deals on older stuff like dune and hitchikers? Modern contracts like Project Hail Mary?) then I’d be into using it.

It looks like they’re (more or less) matching the author royalty on the book out of their own slice of the sale price, which means a 100% increase in payment for the author on per book sales (NOT that the authors are getting 100% of the sale cost). In order to get that, however, the authors need to sign up with Allstora and provide verification they are the author. Since the bookstore is (apparently) not doing anything different with how it’s getting books from publishers, there’s no need for them to try to rewrite contracts, etc.
