I recently read Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries, and it instantly became one of my favorite books ever. It reminded me of a grown-up version of more traditional, dark folklore-type fairytales, in the vein of Hans Christian Andersen (The Snow Queen, for example), with perhaps a bit of Miyazaki thrown in.

Can anyone recommend similar books? Where the fantastical subject matter is taken seriously but is still whimsical?

And though I did say “grown-up,” I’m not looking for super dark themes; I know Anne Rice has a Sleeping Beauty series that features BDSM. That’s not my cup of tea.

Check out **Uprooted** by Naomi Novik. It’s a mature fairytale-like story, but not super dark.
