I found a post talking about this but it was like 9 years old. I’m sorry if this is a really FAQ but I’ve recently gotten into Letterboxd and it’s kind of changed my perspective on those types of apps.

I’ve never been able to get into GoodReads to be honest, I just don’t like the layout. Plus I’m a big reader and it takes ages to log books you’ve read. I spent ages yesterday logging over 120 books and then when I went back to it today it said I’d only logged 80 and it seemed to have just deleted a load. I’m not all that interested in repeating the process.

I’d love a nice straight forward and satisfying alternative.

    1. I like The StoryGraph. It has a big page of stats and graphs on the books you read, which is very satisfying to me. Also, features are added and improved regularly.

I left Goodreads after it became so difficult to list new books.

After that I used Bookstats, which is neat, but eventually switched to Reado.

Bookstats has more, well, stats, so if you’re into that, that might be the right app for you.

Reado is very much straight forward and simple to use.

I still do Goodreads, but I don’t think they do a good job of keeping it fresh and agree with a comment below that it is very hard to add a new book, especially if it’s self-published or by a smaller press. But I actually find that a lot of their reviews are more reliable than on Amazon or other book sites, though I do think that they should get rid of a lot of groups that have been inactive for ages. Get the feeling that there’s not a lot of oversight.

    4. Holiday reads: Richard and Judy’s Book Club and similar (I’ve found some great ‘beach’ type reads there).
Otherwise I read the newspapers (Guardian etc in the UK) and make a note of anything that looks interesting.
Gave up on Goodreads many years ago. It’s the Tripadvisor of books.
