For the month that’s in it – can anyone recommend some potentially lesser know Gothic classics?
I’m specifically trying to find something spooky that evokes the atmosphere of the trip that inspired Byron, the Shelleys & Polidori – mixed with the first time Dracula is sighted scaling the castle walls.

*The Castle of Otranto* by Horace Walpole is considered the first gothic novel and was written in the 1700s. It’s a little weird (it’s more wtf than creepy) but it has great vibes.
*Beloved* by Toni Morrison is (imo) a Southern gothic novel that is both creepy and heartbreaking. It’s about a freed slave family that is being haunted by a ghost.
*The Turn of the Screw* by Henry James is a ghost story that has strong Brontë sister vibes; very gothic. It also kind of set up the modern day ghost story where it’s narrated by someone who’s telling someone else’s story.
You may enjoy [Carmilla](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/55648601) by J. Sheridan Le Fanu which predates Dracula and is a sapphic vampire story.
