Like, every time someone talks about a YA or NA fantasy novel, they always talk about the main characters, but they never talk about the villain. Like, the last time people were hyped for a great fantasy villain was the Darkling from Shadow and Bone, and that’s only because he carried the series. If you brought up Six of Crows, you think about Kaz or Ineq, or the rest of the Crows. But you never hear conversation about Jan Van Eck or Pekka Rollins. The only memorable villain I can think of is Voldemort.

I’m not trying to tear down Sauron here. He is is the PEAK of fantasy villains, or villains in general. But what I’m asking is that has there been any fantasy books lately in THIS decade where the villain (not the villain hero or the anti-heroic character with villainous qualities, but the MAIN VILLAIN) that has generated discussion from readers for how great of a character they are?
