Just finished reading this book for the first time, and I absolutely loved it. From start to finish I was intrigued by the simple yet bizarre and dreamlike writing style.
I loved how the main character would be taken on a long car journey through the countryside, only to “remember” later on that his destination was actually attached to the hotel he’d started from.
I adored the part where Ryder was practicing his piano piece near the cemetery and it was hinted afterward that he was actually playing in some sort of mausoleum.
The scenes that were set to make you feel uneasy were explained simply away, such as the passage where Ryder, Sophie and Boris entered a dark hotel passage and heard a slithering sound, only to find out it was Gustav dragging a suitcase.
I felt strangely recognized throughout the entirety of the book, as someone who has always had trouble remembering where they were and how they got there, their surroundings suddenly feeling bizarre and surreal, and I half expected to learn that Ryder had some sort of dissociative disorder.
