I’ve really been wanting to put my feet into a gumshoe if that makes sense. I have in mind older stories that really introduce me to some of the tropes and expectations of the genre, but anything modern that is of quality I wouldn’t be opposed to. Bonus points if an element of Cyberpunk exists in the setting.

Edit: Thank you guys for the suggestions! I’ll be checking them out!

I like the more modern ones like by authors such as Lisa Jewell and Lisa Jackson. But I tried to get into an older series by Clive Cussler and couldn’t do it bc it was supposed to be an older detective and more western vibe. But I believe this is something you’d be into then

It’s not cyberpunk, but Asimov’s The Caves of Steel is probably the first science fiction detective story

    3. The progenitors of the genre hold up nicely. Hammett and Chandler, and then some put Ross MacDonald up there with them. I also have a thing for Ross Thomas, who is a second generation writer of this type who also folded in both political machinations and international suspense to the classic PI format. His _Briarpatch_ is a standalone that remains quite delightfully lovely. Another second/third gen writer worth knowing is Walter Mosley, specifically the Easy Rawlins series.

    4. There are a lot of different types of detective fiction.

Robert B Parker has 3 different leads. The legendary Spenser, which had a tv show based on it Spenser for Hire. Mostly action and great dialogue. Sunny Randle, a character he original developed in the hopes it could be used for a Ellen Hunt show or movie, and Jesse Stone, a darker more flawed character.

Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter. Intelligent, dark, humorous. Also a insightful into foster system issues.

John Sanford’s Lucas Davenport – more thriller with humor.

Miss Fortune Series by Jana DeLeon – laugh out loud hilarious, cozy mysteries with a touch of romance. Kinda like Burn Notice meets the A-team meets Golden Girls.
