Huge caveat: I haven’t read it yet, but I’ve heard glowing reviews of The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store (James McBride). As I understand it, there are two timelines, one of which takes place in the ‘20s and ‘30s. And it definitely sounds like small-town violence is a plot detail here.
