Just watched some people’s reactions to Logan last night, and I don’t know why, but this type of narrative hits me so hard emotionally. Perhaps my paternal instincts kicking in lol.

Here are some media property examples that utilize this sort of character dynamic:

    **Movies:**

    – Logan

    **Games:**

    – The Last of Us

    – Tell Tale’s The Walking Dead Season 1 (not a reluctant “father” but fits the bill nonetheless)

    – LISA: The Painful

I want to get back into reading so I was wondering if there are any good novels out there that also have this type of dynamic, where two unrelated characters adopt a father – daughter relationship due to circumstance.

I’m open to any genre with this sort of story, I know it’s typically done in some sort of sci-fi or fantasy apocalyptic scenario, but I’d be interested in anything really, I just want to rekindle my passion for reading.

Bonus points if the father figure has nothing/lost everything.

I be going through it y’all, I need dat escapism.

Arya’s arc in *A Song of Ice and Fire* has a number of examples of this trope.

If you want another film and are open to subtitles, *Amanda* (2018) is a lovely little French movie about a young man who has to care for his niece after his sister is killed in a terrorist attack.

Octavia Butler has a very interesting short story titled *Blood Child* that discusses men being biologically designed to carry the offspring of an alien species. Not exactly what you asked for, but adjacent. It was a very interesting story and it has stuck with me ever since I read it.

News of the World by Paulette Jiles. There is also a movie, but I didn’t think it lived up to the book, which was great. What was especially appealing about the book was exactly the dynamic between the two main characters.

This book is exactly what you want.

    4. Oh lord, you would LOVE *Between Two Fires* by Christopher Buehlman. It’s my favorite incarnation of this trope, and fits your list to a T: disgraced knight who has lost everything finds an orphan girl during the Black Death, but there are more powerful and mysterious forces at work in the world.

Just a warning though, EVERY trigger warning applies. This is a dark book. I love it and recommend it wholeheartedly as long as you have a strong stomach

    5. How about Blackbird by Michael Fiegel? I came across it by accident a year or two back and really enjoyed it.
