My friend’s birthday is in about two months. I wanted to buy her a novel, and I’ll probably end up reading it myself too.
She’s read *The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared* by Jonas Jonasson, *The Cellist of Sarajevo* by Steven Galloway, *Life of Pi*, several books by Lisa See, *Secret Child* by Andrew Crofts and Gordon Lewis, *We Were the Lucky Ones* by Georgia Hunter, *Her Fearful Symmetry* by Audrey Niffenegger, and she’s a big fan of Khaled Hosseini.
Hopefully these give a good idea of the types of books she enjoys. I think the general theme is stories about people in other cultures. She also loves sci-fi, stuff like Star Trek. I don’t know if she’d enjoy a book about that, though.
I originally picked up *The Antique Hunter’s Guide to Murder* by C.L. Miller. It’s a pretty fun read, but I don’t think it’s quite in line with the other books she’s told me about.
No religious suggestions, please. Also nothing spicy or where romance is a primary plotline.
