I need help finding a book

Hi, im looking for a short book title i read many years ago about a man in a Syberian camp during the days of the kgb, he does logging on thw outside of the camp and him and others devise an escape plan via the 1 way off on a cable car the escape is sucessfull and he escapes into the woods, ventually building a log cabin befriending a wolf pup and killing a bear for its pelt and meat. I cant remember if he was trying to get to poland, but the book os mainly about his survival in the woods for many years before being discovered, if i remember correctly he helps a young boy find his way back to a town.
