Characters who are obsessed with/envious of the moneyed classes, to the point that they would kill to become one of them (like murderous little Jay Gatsbys!)
Tom Ripley is the obvious one. Two others I’ve come across recently are Dix Steele in *In a Lonely Place* (it’s not a huge part of the plot but it’s there), and Arthur in Stanley Ellin’s short story *The Best of Everything*.
Any other suggestions? I’m particularly interested in mid-century crime/mystery fiction, but any book suggestions with similar characters would be gratefully received!
