Looking for a book to read to my kids. They’re 10, 6 and 4. Don’t necessarily need one that will appeal to all those ages, I read with them together and separately.

They love something with a little humor, especially when it’s coming from kids. For example, we just finished reading house in the cereluen sea and they really enjoyed the humor of the kids. Not complete satire though. We tried hitchhikers guide for example and it fell flat. They want a real plot, just with some laughs along the way.

Adult plots are ok. Just finished dune and starship troopers with the oldest. Just as long as not too much graphic sex and violence.

A Series of Unfortunate Events. It has three siblings (not quite the same ages though) and relies heavily on the plot

What about the old Chicken Soup the the soul books? Short stories the kids one is “101 stories of Courage, Hope and Laughter.” And I think there is more than one chicken Soup For The kids soul. There are also the teen/adult/pet lovers/women’s versions too

    3. There is the Tiffany Aching arc in the Discworld series, by Sir Terry Pratchett (GNU!), which is meant for younger readers. There’s “The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents” from the Discworld as well.

Oh, and naturally Tolkien, “The Hobbit”.

The First Law trilogy ….. Yes its grim …. Yes it can very very dark sometimes ….. But it’s sure as hell often funny …. Like laugh out loud funny 😂

    5. Perhaps the Percy Jackson series, or anything in the Rick Riordan vein? They’re “middle-grade” and definitely have real plot and a lot action, but with some laughs that would probably appeal to at least the older couple kids

    6. Mostly for the eldest:
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
      Far North by Will Hobbs
      Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
And find a copy of The Weirdo by Timothy Taylor and tuck it away for a year or two. It was one of my favorites, but maybe not yet.
*edit* also Catherine Called Birdie by Karen Cushman in a bit *

      Mostly or the Youngest:
      Barn Dance by Bill Martin

      For All:
Pretty much anything by Shel Silverstein
