I’m in a bit of a sci-fi rut. Some examples of what I’ve liked:
I loved the Wayfarer series.
Dune was great. I’ve only read the first but heard too many mixed reviews about the sequels eventually going off the rails to move forward.
The first Hyperion novel was great (the second was pretty good, didn’t like the Keets dream POV),
Three Body Problem was pretty good but I had enough of the regular complaints to continue.
Hunt the Stars was good but I don’t like reading romance and didn’t realize that when I picked it up.
I love Murderbot, have read the first three and will continue soon.
I’m open to an epic series spanning multiple books (but Malazan might be too much) or a single book. Doesn’t need to be epic either.
Thanks!

– Ancilliary Justice by Ann Leckie
– The Outside by Ada Hoffman
– The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson
The Ancillary books by Ann Leckie
The Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold. AND her Fantasy books.
Standalone: Anatham by Neil Stephenson

The Expanse is the gold standard space opera series.
The Expanse by James S.A. Corey
Also with Dune I would recommend reading Dune Messiah it’s not very long and is along the same lines as the first book, after that is when there began to be mixed feelings about where the books were going
One of my favorite books is one that not many people seem to have read, but that should be right up your alley:
*Marrow* by Robert Reed.
It’s a fascinating story about humans discovering a mysterious, empty ship that’s bigger than most planets. It takes place over thousands of years, but with the same characters because nanotechnology has made them nearly immortal. Check it out!
