This novel was excruciating to finish. Another unreliable narrator who jumps around a lot. It had a few ” but that’s not what really happened” points that added no suspense or intrigue. The story is written similarly to a play but done poorly, which is explained at the Epilogue, but still brought nothing to the story. It was predictable and lacked twists. It was boring reading Elliot’s narration but if do audio the voice and tone of Elliot is exactly how I imagined it. I was expecting a “who done it?” story but it became a “why done it?” story and all I could think was “who cares?”. I was not invested at all with the characters or what happened on the island. Lack Luster is how I would describe it. The only thing shocking were the nods to Michaelides prior novels. If my neighborhood book club didn’t pick this book, I wouldn’t have bothered to finish it. I’m sorry if I come off harsh, but I really could not find anything I enjoyed about this read. The Silent Patient I enjoyed, The Maidens was eh, but this one was not my taste.
What did you think of this book? What did you like/dislike? Do you agree or disagree about my take on it? What do you think could have improved the story?
