I think it was Kurt Vonnegut who said books about sick, poor people don’t sell. My entire ambition as a writer is to prove this wrong, but it occurs to me I ought to read more precedents.
So stuff like *Hunger* by Knut Hamsun, *Crime and Punishment* and *Notes From the Underground* by Dostoevsky, etc. I prefer 19th and 20th century fiction, but I’m flexible.
