I’m going to be spending two weeks in Florida as the bike mechanic on a fundraiser bicycle tour in support of MS. I have a ten hour train ride at the start of my journey, and then ten days of driving and camping, lots of hurry up and wait situations.

I need a book (or several) that I just can’t put down. I’ve been struggling to read as often as I like lately, and I think something gripping would get me back into the right groove.

I like to read science fiction, everything from classic sci-fi to modern space operas, to techno-thrillers. I like when books aren’t so serious about themselves; I like occasionally goofy writing or dialogue, and when the author really interacts with you as the reader. For example, Jason Purgin’s Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits, or Douglas Adams, both did a good job of interacting with the reader in a fun way. Alternatively, I also gravitate towards serious thrillers in the vein of Michael Crichton and his work. Anything mind bending that is then explained by science is right up my alley.

Outside of sci-fi, I also enjoy fantasies, mysteries, and fiction based in history. For example, Deep River by Karl Marlantes was one of my favorite reads of the past few years. Also, I think I’d like to dip my toes into the horror genre. I’ve read some Steven King, and I like Dan Simmons’ sci-fi (haven’t tried his horror stuff yet), but could use a suggestion on something super creepy and unsettling that isn’t paranormal.

I made a similar post in this community a few years ago and y’all really came through with some awesome suggestions, so thank you in advance for reading all this and sharing some of your favorites!
