according to Robinson Crusoe: Chapter VII

    >grapes upon the trees. The vines had spread, indeed, over the trees, and the clusters of grapes were just now in their prime, very ripe and rich. This was a surprising discovery, and I was exceeding glad of them; but I was warned by my experience to eat sparingly of them; remembering that when I was ashore in Barbary, **the eating of grapes killed several of our Englishmen**, who were slaves there, by throwing them into fluxes and fevers.

After all, this book was written in the 18th century, and I’m speculating whether this is merely superstition or hearsay. there are many reasons that could also lead to fluxes(diarrhea) and fever.

However, through my research, I have found that grapes can **indeed cause diarrhea**.

    >Diarrhea: Grapes are high in fiber, and consuming too much fiber can cause diarrhea, especially if you are not used to eating high-fiber foods.

    >Upset stomach: Eating a large amount of grapes can cause an upset stomach, bloating, and discomfort due to their high fiber and sugar content.

Although I have never experienced diarrhea or fever from eating grapes, defoe is right about this.
