I was wondering if I could get some help in picking up some of Chekhov’s work. I understand he wrote an immense quantity of stories and plays and was wondering what collection(s) I should start with. One thing – I want to avoid Schmidt. I know he is very polarising. However, I don’t want such an aggressive adaptation.
I’m working my way through the Russian greats and have just finished the brilliant ‘A Hero of Our Time’ by Lermontov translated by Nabokov. I feel like I’ve overlooked Chekhov so far and I’m aiming to remedy that with my next purchase.
