So, I’ve almost finished reading the Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse and absolutely fell in love with it: the way it delves into both Harry’s psyche and human conciousness is something I’ve rarely before.

I was talking to this girl I’m seeing today (we’ve gone on two dates so far, so pretty recent), and eventually we reached the topic of literature – as we pretty much always seem to do lol – she is a pretty avid but casual reader, like, reads a lot of Colheen Hoover but is acquainted with the classics too, though nothing as weird as some people might find Hesse’s work. She asked me what I’ve been reading and I hesitated to tell her about it because, well, I don’t want to weird her out. Eventually I just said “a Study in Scarlet, of the Sherlock Novels”, my previous read.

I’m mainly worried about the racist jargon and about her misinterpreting and thinking I relate to Harry Harley or his relationship with Hermine. Probably overthinking, but do you think it’s a safe book to recommend to casual readers?
