Hello I recently started a very book collection and and am going to start organizing them in a bookshelf. Searching up how to prevent books from yellowing showed me that you shouldn’t mix yellow books and white ones because the yellowness spreads. Is that true? Should I completely separate them or should I just maintain a distance from the white books?

It’s my understanding that yellowing is caused by environmental factors, primarily exposure to UV rays. It doesn’t make sense that it would spread from one book to another. That said I haven’t looked into it extensively and I’m sure there’s people in this sub with more detailed knowledge than I that can weigh in.
It’s just oxydation. Keep the new ones out of the sun and you should separate them if you’re worried about the gasses produced by that process from yellowing your newer books.
This is the first time I ever heard anything about this. I shouldn’t worry about it. Yellow books smell better to me 😉 Maybe organise them on a sliding scale of yellowness as opposed to alphabetically? 🙂
