So my problem is I gravitate mainly towards crime/thriller/horror and I always end up reading novels led by troubled female characters with whom I empathize way too much. Think authors like Gillian Flynn or Paula Hawkins. This always results in me wallowing in my own misery and developing sort of a victim mentality, esp. if the book features any kind of abuse towards children or women.
I tried to get into romance, and while it starts out well, I always end up DNFing and just thinking “well, this book is crap” (no offence to romance readers, I really wished I liked those books!). I just can’t deal with it when the book is geared towards adults but the main character is still going crazy over someone else with sappy descriptions of his/her eyes, smile, abs, whatever.
So knowing this, what kind of books do you think I could read that can leave me with a more empowered mindset and happy feelings?
Any genre will do I guess… even romance if you have a suggestion that you really really think won’t feel like crap.
