I’ve heard so much about Dune how it’s many peoples favorite sci-fi book and favorite book of all time even. I’m on the second book, or more like the second big chapter of the first book.
The messages seem shallow, about resources, politics, crooked government, etc. My god the characters, I could be damned if they live or die. Maybe due to their cold flat demeanors or lack of description, I just don’t care about them. The technology is horrible. I know it was written 60 years ago, but for some reason the word “thopter” pisses me off. “Lasgun” give me a break. Not to mention the shields going off like nuclear explosions if they’re shot. Thats a gigantic cataclysmic fault in the technology making them so dangerous probably nobody would use them unless they were TRYING to use them as bombs. The whole book seems to lack description, leaving it up to me to piece together what the world, characters, and tech looks like. Some people might like that but not me.
Overall pretty disappointed and I don’t think I’ll read the later books.
