I would like to buy a book for my friend (34M, a smart software developer and family man) for his birthday. Something to encourage his use of some of the languages he knows, but hasn’t had the opportunity to use for several years now, which is something he has expressed in passing feeling some light grief over.
His favorite author is Bill Bryson, but I believe he has read all of his books already, but I know that he also enjoys travel records written with lively imagery.
A light and enjoyable journey in the vein of Bryson, originally written preferably in Spanish, Portuguese or French, might be just what he is looking to read in his free time, with the added benefit of getting to use other languages than he uses in his daily life.
Preferably more history or other interest oriented than touristy.
