Hey folks! My husband recently got a promotion that has come with a lot more stress, and is struggling to switch off before bed. Part of that is because he’s reading things on his phone. I’d love to get him a small bundle of books that he might enjoy to help with winding down and putting the phone down. Fiction only! A long time ago he says “I liked Tom Clancy and Christopher Brookmyre” and he’s also enjoyed some Murakami. He loves sci fi on TV but hasn’t read much. Going to put Foundation on the pile for sure. What other recommendations would you folks have?

    1. Why fiction only? Are you sure? Cutesy, manly, inspiring, philosophical, gutsy, etc., these aren’t reserved only for the land of make believe. Donkeys, ice floes, and rucking can be fun too. See below for examples.

      *Running With Sherman* –Christopher McDougal

*Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage* –Alfred Lansing*

      *The Comfort Crisis* –MIchael Easter

if he liked brookmyre he *might* like trainspotting by Irvine Welsh. it’s interlinked short stories so not too demanding on the attention span.

    3. John Grisham books have the Clancy appeal of “Competent people being good at their jobs.”

City Watch from Discworld by Terry Pratchett. Starts with Guards Guards. I wasn’t much of a reader before I found Pratchett and he broke the slump big time!

    5. The motes in God’s eye, the expanse, the Martian. All sci Fi space books all are great. Also you might want to get a e-reader for reading in bed at night as blue light from phones can keep you awake and prevent you from falling asleep. If you read from physical try using a warm light reading light clip. Also if he hasn’t read Jurassic Park it’s super great. For war books the killing zone my time in Vietnam is really good and there is a scifi war book written by a Vietnam vet named the killing war.
