On 01/29/24 I started James Ellroy’s L.A. Quartet in order and I’ve just finished the L.A. Confidential, the third novel. So far The Big Nowhere, the second in the series, is my favorite. I’m about to start White Jazz.
As a huge fan of noir in television and film I’ve never thought to read noir and man have I really missed out. I can’t stop thinking about this series and how dark, brutal, and phenomenally plotted they are. I’m thinking about the story all day and dreaming about them at night.
I keep thinking man I would love to see a fully detailed and executed tv series where each season is one novel. The closest we got to an adaptation is Nic Pizzolatto’s spiritual retelling of The Big Nowhere in True Detective Season 2.
I can’t wait to start White Jazz and finish it but for any other noir lovers out there I’m looking for more noir novels to add to my reading list. Specifically set in L.A. but totally open to others as well. Also let me know your thoughts on the first three books in the Quartet. And no spoilers for White Jazz please.
