I enjoyed both The Long Walk by “Richard Bachman”(Stephen King) and The Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura for how they both put a group of teenagers together and then just sit with them— there’s an interesting premise in both, and that results in some amount of plot, but mostly, the characters talk about their lives and problems and get to know each other and their troubles. Each character brings a different perspective based on their experience, and they all grow closer to each other over the course of the novel. What’s interesting to me is the large group of characters that feel like they have rich inner lives, and how the characters in each book seemed to implicitly understand the others based on the shared experience that brought them together, even if the other details of their lives are quite different.
