I’ve read the Jane Haper Aaron Falk series, the DS Walker stories by Patricia Wolf which I didn’t like too much, and The Bat by Nesbo which I hated, and a couple more that I can’t remember the name of right now…
I generally love the way the Australian setting is used as opposed to the typical American suburbian drama with the busybody neighbors etc. It’s a nice switchup. I like how the characters tend to be more practical people and I like the edge of survivalism that come out in the outback. The plot twists tends to be less contrived, etc…
I’m looking for anything without the “Missing White Woman (visiting from Europe)” trope that also includes some indigenous main characters. They don’t need to be the detective, but just not the villains, or the suspects or portrayed as dumb, incompetent, insane serial rapists, etc…
I get that a lot of visiting tourists probably do go missing in the outback and that the authorities probably do take international cases more seriously, but I would like to read something a little more focused on the local peoples.
I know “Australian crime” is a relatively small subgenre, but I feel like this has to exist.
