Either historical or just the theory both works! I have read a lot of fantasy series that dealt with it and I wanted to educate myself more on the subject 🙂
Obv, alchemy is a fake science, in that there is absolutely no basis whatsoever for it ever working.
However, Newton was a keen alchemist [though it didn’t work for him, either.] I think he may have written about it?
Fantasy books with alchemy [failed alchemy..] – The Forest of Hours by Kerstin Ekman which is a very weird and disturbing book, but contains a lot about alchemy [and shows the process, if you are interested – but – don’t try it at home!]
