Not a lot of people I can turn to for advice about living life. I believe in God and go to therapy but still feel “missing”. I am a 24 year old African American female looking to expand my worldly knowledge and add more words to my vocabulary. Is there any books you can suggest to me that will help in developing one’s mind and self? I’ve read self help books and yeah they teach me something, it sometimes is a waste. I’ve read the alchemist and haven’t found the message behind the book. I’ve also read the four agreements. I know the meaning of one’s life is in the person, just been feeling mentally blocked. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

    1. I think that what you are looking for might be this book, it is called The purpose driven life. It has a religious bend into it and it is about figuring out what you want to do for your life.

    2. You might want to read “The Road Less Traveled” by M Scott Peck. I read it a while ago and it helped me out.

    3. In my experience self help books and the like are far too general or specific to be useful. If you want to expand vocabulary and find yourself I would suggest reading books from a genre you find interesting (history, fantasy, mystery, etc). Those books usually have a hidden message within them that can cause a person to question and grow (if you go looking for it). This is very common in the classics, so if you end up deciding to go this route you could always start there.

    4. The Wild Edge of Sorrow by Francis Weller

      Untamed by Glennon Doyle

      Sophie’s World J Gaarder

*Buddhism Without Beliefs* by Stephen Batchelor
It’s a secular Buddhist book so it shouldn’t conflict with your own religious beliefs. You may find some insight into who you are now and who you might want to be.

This book is a little older and is very likely just sitting on a shelf in the library waiting for you.

Wishing you luck on your journey.
