The former is a question Winston Smith asked O’Brien as well..and the answer was that he could never know. Similar to how he didn’t get an outright answer to whether Big Brother was a real, physical person. What I mean to ask is, did the party itself create the concept of the Brotherhood in order to “catch” people, like Winston and Julia, who commited THOUGHT CRIMES? What about Goldstein? Was he entirely made up as well?

Winston had dreams that came true. He dreamt of Julia, and soon enough he was dating her. He dreamt of O’Brien telling him he would meet him where there was no darkness, and he did meet O’Brien where there was no darkness (though unfortunately it wasn’t what I was expecting). Again, were his dreams coming true a mere coincidence or did George Orwell intend to covey that the party had “planted” his dreams as well?

*I finished reading the novel only yesterday, and though I understood the overall message, there were some things I was having trouble fully comprehending. I hope you guys are able to understand what I am asking. Thanks*
