    1. The Convenant of Water covers some of that history. The core plot is centered around an Indian family and medical issues. Some of the resistance/ independence factors into the story as it progresses.

Its a wonderfully written book, at comes in around 800 pages.

If you are looking to start at the point where Indian and Pakistani independence occurred, I recommend Freedom at Midnight by Collins and LaPierre. It covers the time period from 1946 to 1948 ish. It details the efforts of Lord Mountbatten as the last Viceroy working with Gandhi, Nehru, and Jinnah. It also gives a lot of background information and history. I think it would be a good starting point and a basis for a lot of the problems that have continued to plague India to this day.
