Hello, I’m searching for books where the protagonist endures pain or suffering inflicted by others, akin to what Guts experiences in Berserk. The story doesn’t have to mirror Berserk, but I’m interested in themes of betrayal, intense suffering, and any form of pain caused by another character. The story should follow them as they cope and heal from their traumas, growing stronger. I’m especially interested in narratives where this path of healing involves interactions with unique characters (or love interests) that shape the protagonist’s development.

I’m not tied to any specific genre, so all recommendations are welcome.

    1. “Mercy” and “Ice and Fire” by Andrea Dworkin are semi-autobiographical accounts of endless the endless abuses life heaps on vulnerable women. A recurring dynamic is that Dworkin will turn to a fellow leftist in her life for support, and he will rape her in response. Dworkin copes by channeling her pain into a desire to write, and to use her writing to help other women.

Both novels can feel like just an endless parade of abuse. “Mercy” is a bit more about her relationships with men, and her emotional journey of what to do with her pain. “Ice and Fire” is more of a glimpse into a brief bohemian relationship.

EDIT- Also “Homegoing” by Yaa Gyasi. It’s about a family tree, split by a uniquely innocent betrayal. Half the family remains in Ghana, half are transported to America as slaves. Each chapter is an account of a different generation, so it’s more about generational growth than individual growth. But the idea of depending on others to help recover from trauma is strong.

EDIT 2- “Kiss of the Fur Queen” by Tomson Highway is about two indigenous brothers who survive an abusive Canadian residential school, and how that effects the trajectory of their lives. Community support and cultural connection are big factors in overcoming trauma in the novel.

Monstress by Marjorie Liu. Pretty damn dark and definitely has her own Berzerk moments. It’s a comic and one of the best stories I’ve read to date.
