This volume just looks amazing! Its graphics are of a really high standard, from the cover to the illustrations to the appendices. It’s simply eye-catching to look at. The author, who is a graphic artist himself, has obviously put his heart and soul into it.
According to the story, they find a mysterious object in the depths of London, with its own little world and a lot of questions. The characters are interesting: from the geeky scientists to the nervous manageress, they all add something to the story. The black locomotive in the title itself comes to life as a quasi-living being as it transports the protagonist.
Unfortunately, the text of the novel is sometimes drawn out and reads slowly, which can reduce the reading experience. Also, the plot of the story itself is not really surprising, and as we move forward, we can see that it is not really unique; it’s more in the cheap action movie category.
Overall, it’s a strong mediocre book, with impressive graphics and interesting characters that make it stand out from the crowd. Instead of 350+ pages, 200 would have been enough.
