Flopped as in negative critical reviews, not just didn’t gain popularity. Was just curious how much of an author’s success depends on their debut book and if any have been able to bounce back after a first book that didn’t meet expectations.
I can think of authors who were known for their manuscript being rejected or who wrote many books before the one that got them their audience but don’t know of any who had a specifically negatively reviewed first book but bounced back.

Lev Grossman’s *Warp* (1997) was torn to shreds on publication, but then he found some success with *Codex* (2004), and then *The Magicians* (2009) became a flyaway success that gave rise to two sequels and one fucking awful TV adaptation.
