Jack Vance has written a lot of different series/ worlds you may enjoy.

Julian May also (Saga of the Exiles).

I know you said fantasy but Pierce Brown “Red Rising” series is incredible. It leans more towards sci-fi/dystopian genre. It is so immersive and the character are *chefs kiss* highly recommend.

    3. Just started the Richard Nell 3 book Ash and Sand series and have been enjoying it so far.

What about something more in the realm of sci-fi ? *Hyperion* is a great book, with 4 in the series. I still think it fits your criteria in escaping to another world.

    5. Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books. He wrote Good Omens with Gaiman, if you read that. The Discworld books are often even better. I usually recommend starting with Small Gods, although there are lots of people and reading charts that give different opinions.

    6. Kate Baker. She wrote an amazing series about cyber people who worked for ‘The Company.’ They get drunk on ‘theobroma,’ bounce around in history through Time Machine manipulations, and one, Mendoza, becomes the lover AND MOTHER of a strange guy who keeps being reincarnated and finding her. One immortal ends up captive by the Fairy Queen who’s really a nasty dwarf, and is out of action for centuries. Just a whole fascinating series of wildly imaginative fantasy story-telling.

    7. If you want to try a little different—

Poppy War and Babel both by RF Kuang

Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

      Jade City by Fonda Lee

      Fifth Season by NK Jemison

      There’s also

Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne

      Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett

Anne McCaffrey. Most people start with the Dragons of Pern, but her others are good too (although they are more sci-fi or blends of sci-fi and fantasy like Powers That Be)

Melanie Rawn. I love the Ambrai books, Dragon Prince is another good one)

Patricia C Wrede. Enchanted Forest Chronicles

Robert Gainey. His series about an understaffed FBI task force working with and against magical creatures is 10/10 and hardly anyone ever brings it up!

    10. Horror-Perception936 on

October Daye series by Seanan McGuire, starting with Rosemary and Rue

Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne, starting with Hounded

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. About a man living in a seemingly infinite stone house in an alternate reality with no knowledge of who he is or how he got there.

    12. Most people think of Clive Barker as a horror author, but Imajica is beautifully written high fantasy.

    13. Key_Piccolo_2187 on

Books of Babel series, by Josiah Bancroft. It’s *excellent*. There are also many good suggestions elsewhere in this thread, I’m loving it.
