I finished “The Thirteenth Tale” yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was on track to becoming one of my favorite books, but I stumbled upon an issue. Some parts seemed to rely heavily on coincidence, like Margaret, the stranger, discovering that Aurelius has a sister after all these years. I mean she saw him once or twice and then boom you have a family that you didn’t know about your whole life…
I’m also puzzled as to why Vida never cared for Aurelius. Perhaps Emmeline, the mother, lost her mind after the death of her twin, explaining her lack of care. But why did Vida leave him? She prevented him from seeing his mother and essentially made him feel lost his whole life.
Maybe she didn’t want to interfere since he had Mrs. Love, but wouldn’t she have regretted it over time? And didn’t his biological mother ever wonder about him?
