I’m trying to help my mom find some new fiction. She only really likes literary fiction, and does not like any sort of genre fiction like romance, sci-fi, mystery, etc. Historical fiction is fine as long as it’s like 1960+.

She enjoys books with complicated family dynamics / relationships. She’s also a feminist and career woman, was super into the women’s lib movement in the ’70s, and enjoys books with powerful women.

A couple of her favorite authors: Jonathan Franzen and Ann Patchett.

She read “Where the Crawdads Sing” recently and really liked it.

I recently finished The Secret History and she borrowed it, but she hates it so far. She thinks it’s beautifully written but is not a fan of the characters/plot/etc.

I also suggested Demon Copperhead and she seemed mildly interested in that.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

*Unsheltered* and *Prodigal Summer* by Barbara Kingsolver (in my opinion, they are much better than Demon Copperhead)

*Mouthing the Words* by Camilla Gibb

*A Complicated Kindness* by Miriam Toewes

      *Eleanor Rigby* by Douglas Coupeland

Margaret Atwood might be a good author for her, but she’s one of those authors you love or hate. The Robber Bride, Cat”s Eye or Alias Grace might be a good place to start. Stay away from Oryx Crake series, its fantasy.

The Poisonwood Bible is my favourite Barbara Kingsolver novel

      Angela”s Ashes by Frank McCourt

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

This Must Be the Place by Maggie O”Farrell (I preferred Hamnet but not sure if your Mom is OK with sexual content and its set in 1500)
