I need some book suggestions for my mom. She is an 80 year old widow who loves U.S. history, historical fiction, patrioticism, patriotic WW II non-fiction, but hates obscenity. She abhors the “F” word. Books she loved include: Ambrose’s Band of Brothers, Brokaw’s Greatest Generation, Bradley’s Flags of Our Fathers, Brokaw’s Never Give Up, and Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I thought about suggesting Project Hail Mary or Ender’s Game, but she’s never been into SciFi.

    1. ‘Thunder Below’ by Admiral Fluckey is a great (nonfiction) book about an American submarine during WW2, and I’m pretty sure there’s no profanity in it. I think the worst is a ‘damn’, and one of the crew (who’s diary is being quoted in that section) remarks that it was strange for Fluckey to even use that, since he normally hated profanity.

    2. My brother is ex military and a history buff. He loves the Newt Gingrich novels (not his political books). He takes a major event in US history and writes a novel as if history had gone a different way. Just a suggestion.

    3. [The Book of Last Letters](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60209563-the-book-of-last-letters) by Kerry Barrett

I enjoyed these series, maybe your mom would too.

The Elm Creek Quilts series by Jennifer Chiaverini, the first book is [The Quilter’s Apprentice](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/148874.The_Quilter_s_Apprentice).

The Study Series by Maria V. Snyder, the first book is [Poison Study](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60510.Poison_Study).

Harpers Emporium by Rosie Clarke, the first book is [The Shop Girls of Harpers](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53099826-the-shop-girls-of-harpers)

    4. “A Gentleman in Moscow” Amor Towles. For nonfiction, I suggest something by John McPhee, either”Founding Fish” or “Oranges”

    5. WhyDoTheyCallYouRed on

      Trinity by Leon Uris.

Outlander by, I forgot her name, but it’s a huge series.

    6. The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared.

A lovely man with a peculiar background as an explosives expert escapes his nursing home to “start over”. He encounters many criminals and interesting individuals on his journey, and we hear tales from his past life and dealings with his prior job title.

Try ‘One summer, America 1927’ by Billy Bryson. He also does other studies on various non fiction areas that are very well written and entertaining.
