Hi! Im looking for some fantasy/sci-fi book recommendations with morally grey main characters.
I can’t really think of any good examples off the top of my head. But I’ve always liked how complex a story feels when the author refuses to allow readers to view the plot/ character interactions from a 1-dimensional mindset. I want characters that are so interesting that I don’t have to rely on romance to keep me interested (not that I’d be opposed).
I’d honestly be fine with any genre of fantasy and would be happy with just having a place to start with. Also, even though the MC is pretty unique in their mindset I’d like it if they were also able to form a super deep mutual bond with another character. It can be familial, platonic, or romantic. Idgaf I just want to feel the love and trust between the two characters.
Bonus points if the MC struggles with empathy as I relate heavily with those characters and are strong/ powerful.
Also, I kept the requirement for this request extremely vague because I’d quite literally appreciate anything y’all have to offer.
Thank you and fingers crossed I get recs!

– The Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchio (book 1 is Empire of Silence)
– The Masquerade series by Seth Dickinson (book 1 is The Traitor Baru Cormorant)
– Red Rising saga by Pierce Brown (book 1 is Red Rising), especially the later books
The *Dark Tower* series might fit the bill.
