I’ve been reading through the book “a writer at war.” It’s a collection of his wartime writings and his journal as he participated in WWII. Having read his book Stalingrad, it’s apparent how many moments from Stalingrad that I considered unbelievable were just anecdotes from his actual time at the front; Dying letters, the cranes being mistaken for planes, jokes about houses plastered with newspapers. Reading this book is like a best moments montage of Stalingrad. I love it. His personal writings were as poetic as his books at times.
