I’m about to order Battle Royale on Amazon and not only are there 3 editions of the books but each are translated by different people. In addition all 3 editions including the now 20 year old first translation by Yuji Oniki released by Viz back in 2003 still have new copies available for sale.

So I’m inspired to ask this. If I buy say the first translation published 20 years ago with a new copy, would the author Koushun Takami
still get royalties from this purchase? Or would he only get money if I buy a new copy of the most recent translation from 2014 by Nathan Collins?

In addition I go ahead ask since I’m already at it, do translators receive royalties to for new copies of books including out of print obsolete editions?

From my understanding, all royalties are paid at time of purchase. If a retailer does not move the books they are free to destroy them to get a refund. These destroyed books don’t count. So I assume everyone got their cut back when Amazon bulk ordered the books.
