I want to get back into reading and Orwell’s 1984 has always sounded interesting to me. However, I think I need something a bit gripping, not a deep allegory for society that you need a doctorate to enjoy. Basically I’m just wondering if I would be able to casually enjoy 1984, or if it’s more of just a “school” book.

    1. 1984 is like the Beatles of dystopian literature. You won’t think it’s intense today, but back then they were considered the devils music.

It’s got a pretty straightforward plot that is engaging and easy to understand. The only issue is maybe some British or political terminology. (I spent a while wondering what the heck a “prole” was.)

The only real depth is seeing that this absurd fictional society that does ridiculous things… is not actually that far off from our own society. And you can’t really miss it.

I think you could read it just fine. It’s not complex or subtle, more the opposite, very simple and exaggerated. Also quite bleak and depressing.
