When I was younger I used to read a portuguese book named *A fada Oriana* (written in 1958 by Sophia de Mello Breyner, Portugal’s greatest woman)
The book is about a girl whose job is to protect a forest, but she falls in love with a fish and forgets about the forest she protected causing a disaster.
Basically, this books teaches that loving someone is good but it can have a lot of bad consequences.
I no longer have the book but I would like to read it again because despite being a children’s book it makes you think.
I think a lot of people will talk about *Le Petit prince* or the traditional stories by Grimm, Andersen and La Fontaine (I also love them and I had a huge book about them!)

Probably more adult than child, but one of my graduation gifts was Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go”. The idea that success isn’t automatic and that life will be dotted with setbacks and occasional failures (and that those are ok!) really resonated deeply with me. I still pull that book out sometimes to remind myself.
How to Eat Fried Worms taught me about fairness and keeping your word.
Don’t cry Wolf when there isn’t one around.
