Wind-Up Bird Chronicle- Haruki Murakami
So I’ve just completed this book. I have to say this book was a roller coaster of emotions, particularly in my relationship with Murakami. I’ve been so excited to read more for him, after 1Q84 and Kafka on the Shore. Both were some of the best fiction i’ve read in my life. I thought Murakami was going to be my next author to read everything for.
However, WUBC was another almost fulfilled joy. While the various stories where built very beautifully, I didn’t see great connections or resolution towards the end of the book. It felt like some of these characters and stories were built as a stand alone stories. I still dont understand what is the grand connection or meaning they served. And many times they felt like prolonged chat. I think i’m missing a logic in these stories, not a human logic but a story ecosystem logic.
At the end, I’ve enjoyed reading this book although I was looking for a more dramatic or thought provoking ending. Knowing that this is a top recommended read for Murakami makes me wonder if I missed anything. Hardboiled Wonderland is on my list next, although I will not read it for another six months – as some members in this sub suggested – so I don’t get a Murakami burn out.
