I am trying to remember the name of a crime thriller that was made into a movie that I saw recommended on this subreddit. I believe the book was written by a male author and the book was turned into a movie in the 2000s. Plot was about investigators trying to find an abducted child but in the course of the investigation they uncovered a human trafficking ring. Forgive me but I also read Gone Baby Gone right before/after this book so I may have some details mixed up but I do believe the book I’m thinking of was also directed by a celebrity like Ben Affleck and Gone Baby Gone but I could be wrong. I clearly remember the twist of the novel being that the investigators find the room where children were being kept but the children were gone at that point and the investigators knew they failed the child. I saw a clip of this scene making it into the movie and it was very heart wrenching. Again, I don’t think this was a Dennis Lehane book but had a similar style in terms of having a twist and evil in some ways prevailing. I remember the movie had a kind of noir quality and came out around the same time as Se7en. I keep thinking of this scene and it would put it to rest if I could remember the name of the book/novel.
