Just read BOTV for the first time and was entertained.
Immediately after, I read Christopher Hitchens’s [1983 hit piece on Tom Wolfe](https://www.motherjones.com/media/2018/05/read-christopher-hitchens-1983-mother-jones-article-on-tom-wolfe-a-wolfe-in-chic-clothing/) and can’t help but wonder if it was a serious influence. Hitchens specifically called him out for never skewering old money men of action.
I was relatively unfamiliar with Wolfe before I read the book, but IMO it was pretty spot on with most of its social criticism and his prose is great.

Didn’t know about the Hitchen’s article that’s interesting and I’ll have to read it. Just wanted to say I agree with you on Bonfire of the Vanities I read it a few years ago for the first time and loved it. I would advise not watching the movie but it is kind of fun to see how they try for a faithful adaptation and get almost everything wrong.
