I’m finishing up LOTR and I want to take a break from reading series and want to dive into some stand alone novels. Recents that I liked are The Road, do androids dream of electric sheep, between 2 fires, salem’s lot, Snow Crash.
To narrow it down more I like Fantasy and/or dystopian sci-fi. I also like books with a dark tone. Hope this helps
thanks a lot

You could lean more into Stephen King with ‘Under the Dome’ and ‘The Stand’.
‘American Gods’ by Neil Gaiman is a great standalone fantasy book.
The Diamond Age (Neal Stephenson)
Neuromancer is technically part of a series but can be enjoyed as a standalone
A Canticle for Liebowitz
The world of 5 gods has a 3 book series which can be read as standalones.
The Windup Girl
most any Neal Stephenson
Piranesi
The Light Brigade
of course Fahrenheit 451 and 1984
Dune is part of a series but….. kind of the like how the matrix is part of a series….
A Fire Upon The Deep and A Deepness in the Sky are *technically* a series but either can really be read without the other.
Hyperion is 2 series of 2 books that each feel like one continuous stories.
If you enjoy stories with strong female leads, ‘Sabriel’ by Garth Nix is a book I often suggest. It’s a dark and captivating tale of a young necromancer’s quest to find her father and stop the Dead from overrunning her world, all while learning about her own powers.
Ready Player One
Flowers For Algernon
Tigana
Between Two Fires
To Say Nothing of the Dog
